In the world of colour, grey people do not exist.
Although many fairy tales begin with “Once upon a time…”, our story is a bit different. This little girl has no time for such introductions because she is a little explorer with a very curious spirit. If she were to tell her story, it would start abruptly, without setting the scene, emphasizing only what is important to her—discovering the invisible and the unknown. Yes, she is not an ordinary girl. Of course not, for someone named after the polar lights – Aurora – cannot be ordinary.
Every day, Aurora went outside. She could feel that this day would provide her with a new experience. Aurora usually walked with her eyes looking up to the sky. She loved watching the clouds, she learned their names, and knew the differences between them. One time, she almost got scared when she noticed a boy approaching. She asked him if they knew each other and what his name was.
“Lakobrija,” replied the smiling boy. Though they were of the same age, he seemed very wise. Aurora wasn’t surprised when he explained why he had come.
“I heard that you love learning new things and that you’re curious about many things. I’ve come to help you in your quest. You can ask me three questions. There are no limits; you can ask whatever you want, anything that interests you. If you apply what you have learned tomorrow, you will be able to ask another three questions.”
Aurora was so excited that she couldn’t decide which questions to ask. She told Lakobrija that she needed some time to think and that she would return in the evening if he was still there.
“Don’t think too much; close your eyes and say the first question that comes to your mind.”, he suggested.
Aurora asked if she should close her eyes tightly, to which Lakobrija laughed and said that just relaxing would be enough. After a few seconds, Aurora worriedly complained that nothing was happening, and asked, “How will a question come to my mind, and what should I do now?”
He said, more to himself than as an answer, “You are quite impatient.”
Aurora shrugged and, in a conciliatory tone, added, “I know; everyone tells me that. I wish I weren’t so impatient, but I don’t know how to deal with it. So, let that be my first question.”
Lakobrija asked, “Do you love learning and discovering new things?”
Aurora replied that she did, but she wasn’t sure how that was related to her question and impatience.
“Well, it has a lot to do with it. Because impatience prevents you from learning new things. To learn something, it’s very important to be patient, or at least less impatient,” he said.
She liked the answer: it was evident from her smile and the sparkle in her eyes.
“If you listen to me, by tomorrow you should be a bit more patient, and that means you can ask new questions.”
While they talked, Aurora remembered her second question:
“Why don’t some people like colours?!?” This puzzled her; everyone she knew knew that she would paint the whole world if she could.
He said this was a bit more difficult to explain, but he would try:
“Some people have forgotten where they came from and where their true home was. They have got used to the grey over time, and their memories have also started to take on grey tones and shades. So, over time, they no longer remember much of anything from their true home, including the magic of colours. However, there’s always someone nearby who remembers, and that’s how the world is kept from becoming completely grey.
Sometimes it’s a chance encounter with someone who remembers red the most; sometimes green… Women remember yellow more, men remember blue, while children remember purple.
Unfortunately, some people have greyed their lives so much that even these encounters can’t help. That’s when my friends and I visit them in their dreams – when they are sound asleep – and show them just one specific colour, the one they can most easily remember.
They don’t remember it in the morning, but they go to their wardrobe and feel a strong urge to wear, let’s say, something orange. This way, every evening, little by little, their world is coloured, and this also translates into their lives, which they call Reality, even though they have completely forgotten where they came from.”
Aurora’s eyes were so wide that the entire Universe appeared in them, shining with all its colours.
She said she had one more question: where he came from and what he was doing there. Why had he come to her?
Lakobrija laughed and said that was three questions in one.
He thought for a moment and remembered an old friend from whom he had learned so much. Thanks to him, he knew that someday, in some part of the universe, a little girl would look at him with big eyes, seeking an answer he wouldn’t be able to provide, despite his promise. He recalled his friend’s wise words, who had once advised him that if he didn’t know the answer to a question, he couldn’t go wrong by saying Love.
He told little Aurora that he came out of love. He didn’t know how to explain it, but he felt it. “You know, you can feel it too if you look into your heart.”
Her little heart grew larger and larger; it eventually became as big as her eyes after hearing the answer to her second question. Her heart was filled with the universe. It was a universe full of love.
